Vice Admiral Henry C. Giffin, III , was born in Bronxville, New
York. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Naval
Science from the United States Naval Academy in 1967 and was
commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. While at the Naval
Academy, he was selected as an Honorable Mention " All American
" in Lacrosse.
His sea duty assignment include tours of duty on USS STICKELL
(DD 888) as Communications Officer/ Electronics, Material
Officer/Operations Officer; on USS WARRINGTON (DD 843) as
Operations Officer, on USS BLANDY (DD 943) as Executive Officer,
and as Commanding Officer, USS DOMINANT (MSO 431), USS BRISCOE
9DD 977), and USS THOMAS S. GATES (CG 51). During these command
tours he participated in Cuban Refugee, Lebanon Crisis, Counter
Drug and Desert Shield/Storm operations.
Ashore, he has served in the Naval Advisory Group, Vietnam and
Naval Officer Training Center, U.S. Naval Academy Physical
Education Department and later as Assistant Director of
Candidate Guidance; Naval Military Personnel Command as an
Assignment Officer; Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as
Head, Surface Warfare Training Plans Branch, Surface Warfare
Manpower and Training Requirements Division; and Executive
Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Navy Program
Planning Division.
Vice Admiral Giffin was promoted to Flag Rank in July 1992 and
completed his first Flag Officer assignment in November 1994 as
Assistant chief of Staff, Logistics, Allied Forces Southern
Europe. Assigned as Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group TWO in
March 1995, he deployed to the Mediterranean as commander,
George Washington Battle Group, and earned his second star in
June 1995. In September 1996 he assumed duties as Deputy and
Chief of Staff, United States Atlantic Fleet. He was promoted to
vice Admiral and assumed command of the Atlantic Fleet Naval
Surface Force of July 1, 1997.
Vice Admiral Giffin earned his Master of Science Degree in
Industrial Personnel Management from George Washington
University. Additionally, he graduated with highest distinction
from the National War College.
His decorations include the Defense Superior Medal, the Legion
of Merit with three gold stars; the Bronze Star; the Navy
Commendation Medal with two gold stars; the Vietnam Honor Medal
First Class; and various service and campaign awards.
Currently Henry Giffin manages a sales division of a NYSE
company. As group leader of his division he overseas several
hundred staff members. This year his division has been
responsible for several hundred million in sales to the US NAVY.
